Family Group
Birth Place
Alden was born in Vermont according to various census, but the actual birth record can not be found. The marriage record of his youngest daughter confirms that his middle name was Henry. His birth date of May 20th in 1833 was recorded on his marriage record. That record stated that he was born in Barton in Orleans County. Orleans County is in the northern most tier of counties in Vermont so that it borders with Canada.
Marriage
Alden married Jenett Knapp in Plainfield in Washington County, Vermont on February 28, 1857. Jenett was born in nearby town of North Montpelier, Vermont on March 8th in 1839. Her mother had died when she was only 10 years old. Her new step-mother then died the following year and her father then married a young Irish immigrant girl only a few year older than Jenett.
Vermont
They appear together in the 1860 U.S. Census in Orange, Orange County, Vermont along with their first child, listed simply as Sis. Her actual name was Sophronia Jenett, Sophronia in memory of Jenett's mother's name. Orange County is in east central and borders with New Hampshire. Also listed in the same census record is an Asa Whitcomb age 60. It is assumed that Asa is Alden's father, but there is only circumstantial evidence. The record states that Asa was born in New Hampshire. Both Asa and Alden are listed as farmers.
New Hampshire
Alden and family next appear in the 1870 U.S. Census near Keene, New Hampshire in the town of Marlbourgh in Cheshire County. Alden is listed as a farmer and they now have 2 additional children, Elmer born in 1862 in Vermont and William born is 1867 in New Hamspshire. From this we know that they moved to New Hampshire some time between 1862 and 1867.
Minnesota
Ten years pass and in 1880 they are now in Minnesota in Elysian which sets on the border of Le Sueur and Waseca Counties. The family is now complete with the addition of Clara born in 1872 in New Hampshire and Lillian born in 1876. It was not clear as to where Lillian was born. Some census records have it as New Hampshire, while others say Minnesota. A record of her birth was eventually found to be Mankato in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Again we can bracket the time at which they moved from New Hampshire to Minnesota as between 1872 and 1876. Alden's occupation in 1880 is listed as 'Hotel Keeper'.
Iowa
In the 1885 Minnesota State Census, Alden and family, less Sophronia, are found in Le Ray Township in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Sometime prior to 1890, Alden, Jenette, and the 2 youngest girls moves south to Ramsey Township, in Kossuth County, Iowa. On June 12, 1890, their 20 year old daughter, Clara, dies and is buried in the cemetery just south of Bancroft, Iowa. Just 2 years later on February 13, 1892 Jenett dies and is also buried in Bancroft in what was to become the family plot. In the 1895 Iowa Census, Alden and Lillian are living alone in Bancroft, Iowa. Then on October 4, 1897, Alden dies in Bancroft and Lillian is left alone at age 19.
