Name
It is believed that Joseph was born in North Carolina
about 1750. Exactly where he was born is not known
but it was probably in one to the counties in the
northeast corner of the state.
|
Location
There are a series of five small narrow counties in Northeast
North Carolina: west to east respectively, Chowan, Perquimans,
Pasquotank, Camden, and Currituck. These counties are bordered
on the west by the Chowan River and on the south by the large
Albemarle Sound. In some respects, these counties are like
fingers pointing south and each separated from the other by
a series of rivers: west to east respectively,
Yeopim, Little, Pasquotank, North. See the map on the following page.
|
Marriage
Marriage records from Perquimans County show that he married
Helena Elliott on January 20th in 1773.
The census from there lists him with two males, three females,
and a slave. The slave thing is interesting in that one of
Joseph's prized possessions was his book "Story of Quakers"
which he left in his will to his daughter, Mary. It is my
understanding that the Quakers were always against slavery.
|
Helena
Helena was born about 1750, but it is not known where
she was born nor whom her parents were.
According to a Quaker record, Helanna died on July 10, 1777.
|
Move
At sometime Joseph moved his family one county east to Paquotank County
where he filed a will in 1792; the will was probated in 1796.
|
Children
Joseph and Helena had at least 3 children: James, Jeneta,
and Mary. James married Sarah Ann Hoyle
and Mary married Josiah White on January 8, 1800.
According to a Quaker record, Jeneta died on September 26, 1776
|
Will
Joseph was apparently a property owner and farmer with some money,
for in his will he left his property to his son and his cattle
and bees to one daughter and money and personel property to
his other daughter. It must be that he had another daughter
named Charlotte J. who married Moses Jackson, perhaps earlier or with a second
but unknown wife.
