When I saw this pattern (September/October 2017 issue of Quiltmaker), I thought it was so cute, that I JUST had to make it. Then the question was for whom? I have a grand-nephew Mason who turned 5 years in February, and I decided it would be perfect for him. The vehicles were pieced, from little pieces. I used a tray, cut out all the little pieces for a block, then had the tray close to the sewing machine so I could sew a seam, press it, and put it back in place. This method worked really well.

The traffic lights were fused onto the background then hand-appliqued using a blank stitch. The sashing blocks were from scraps so there are a variety of colors, going from yellows, to pinks, to reds, to blues, to purples. Two parallel lines were sewn in the sashing in a continuous manner to represent a roadway going around the sashing. A rectangle was sewn around the traffic lights, then stippling outside the rectangle to fill the outside of the block.
