Grandmother's Handkerchiefs Quilt |
This quilt was made for my sister Michele Lynn Miller Sharp using handkerchiefs
belonging to our Grandmother Lucy Belle Carr Miller. Most of them have a
monogram ‘M’ in the corner thus the setting “on point”. When her husband-to-be
finished his military service in France in WWI, he brought back to her the
three handkerchiefs in the top row, that say (in French): “Souvenir of France”.
These handkerchiefs had been in the closet for 90 years!
The handkerchiefs were attached to the light aqua squares using a variety of embroidery stitches in thread that matched the aqua. The top was hand-pieced then layered and hand-quilted. The handkerchiefs have a fan design quilted inside with a feather arc at the top. The three center tan background blocks have feather rings quilted in them. There are rays in the outer borders. The quilt was hand-pieced and hand-quilted by Nancy E. Miller in 2010 requiring 63 hours of quilting. The quilt is 80" square. |
