John Franklin was a farmer and lived near Swea City in Harrison Township, Kossuth County, Iowa. On March 6th in 1901 he married Ada Helen Slyter in Swea City. They had 5 children: Ira Harold born 18 Feb 1903, Albert Francis born 31 Oct 1904, Dorothy Pearl born 8 Sep 1909, Margaret Anna born 25 June 1914, Helen Irene born 25 Apr 1917, all born in Harrison Township. Sometime in the 1920's he moved the family just across the state line near East Chain in Pleasant Pairie Township, Martin County, Minnesota. He farmed there until he died on May 17, 1943.

Dorothy married Bertwin Wendt in 1930. Helen married Marvin Balcom in 1936. These links are what I believe are wedding photos for Dorothy and Helen.

I was too young to remember John Franklin but I do remember the farm as his son, Ira, had the farm afterward and I remember visiting there and playing with my second cousin, Franklin. East Chain had a very small school, but I remember seeing this picture of Ira on the school's basketball team. I believe they won the state Championship. Ira maybe the one holding the ball, but not sure.

Later in life I had to pleasure of meeting both Dorothy and Helen in Fairmont, Minnesota around 1980. They told me a lot about the McAdams family that I didn't know at the time. Like the fact that my mother had been married and divorce before she married my father.
The conversation went something like this:

Dorothy - I remember how upset Aunt Lilly was when your mother got married.
First I had to figure out who Aunt Lilly was. Dah-Grandma.
Charles - I thought my father got along fine with Grandma.
Helen - Oh, it wasn't him, it was the other fellow.

It was news out of the blue and when they found out I didn't know what they were talking about they both lost any memory about the facts. What they told turned out to be true, but it took several years for me to find the facts.
