John William married Kate Long on December 22, 1891 in Cedar County, Iowa. Kate was born in Aug of 1870, probably in Franklin Township, Linn County, Iowa. Franklin Township abuts Cedar County in the northwest. John and Kate lived in Center Township, Cedar County, Iowa for the next 10 years and had 5 children there: Peter Hiram (b 1892), Anna E (b 1894), Barbara Jane (b 1896), Charles C (b 1899), Ruth L (b 1901). About 1902, they moved north to Oak Dale Township, in Howard County, on the Iowa border with Minnesota. They had 2 more children in Howard county: Ester (b1903) and Jessie L (b 1912). Sometime before 1920, Kate died there in Howard county. In 1930, 64 year old John William is found living with his married daughter, Barbara Jane Kinter, just across the border in Minnesota in Le Roy Township, Mower county. John William died on July 5th in 1939 in McIntire, Mitchell County, Iowa, where his oldest son, Peter Hiram, was living. McIntire is just across the county line east of Howard County. Thus, only a few short miles separated John from his son and from his daughter.

This picture shows Elizabeth (Brown) Staley and 3 of her children and was taken some time around 1900. The 2 young men are: John Willian Staley, standing, with Alphos Marion seated in front of him. Seated on the right is Margaret Ellen (Staley) McAdams.
